Bhimashankar Temple

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, a famous pilgrimage place situated at a distance of 50 kilometers to the northwest of Khed. Bhimashankar Temple is an ancient temple and is located in the village of Bhavagiri. This temple enshrines Bhimashankara, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The other way, Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located in the north of Pune, on the Sahayadri, by the bank of the river Bhima. It is belief that a king named Bhimak of the sun Dynasty pleased to Lord Shiva by the devotion and the Jyotirlinga manifested in the place. But according to the Shiv Purana the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located on the Mountain Brahmapur, district Kamrup of Assam. Lord Shiva had incarnated to destroy the devils and shelter his devotees and for the wellbeing of one and all.

The place has got its name because of the origin of Bhima, a prominent river in Maharashtra. Near the origin of the river, Bhimashankar houses one of the five 'Jyotirlinga' of Maharashtra. The annual Mahashivaratri fair is held in Bhimashankar in February-March and attracts a large number of pilgrims. Numerous devotees from all over Maharashtra and from places outside the states flock near the temple during “Tripuri Poornima”. Bhimashankar is more popular as a tourist place than a religious one due to its breathtaking scenery and extravagant beauty.
