Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, a famous pilgrimage place situated at a distance of 50 kilometers to the northwest of Khed. Bhimashankar Temple is an ancient temple and is located in the village of Bhavagiri. This temple enshrines Bhimashankara, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The other way, Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located in the north of Pune, on the Sahayadri, by the bank of the river Bhima. It is belief that a king named Bhimak of the sun Dynasty pleased to Lord Shiva by the devotion and the Jyotirlinga manifested in the place. But according to the Shiv Purana the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located on the Mountain Brahmapur, district Kamrup of Assam. Lord Shiva had incarnated to destroy the devils and shelter his devotees and for the wellbeing of one and all.


The place has got its name because of the origin of Bhima, a prominent river in Maharashtra. Near the origin of the river, Bhimashankar houses one of the five 'Jyotirlinga' of Maharashtra. The annual Mahashivaratri fair is held in Bhimashankar in February-March and attracts a large number of pilgrims. Numerous devotees from all over Maharashtra and from places outside the states flock near the temple during “Tripuri Poornima”. Bhimashankar is more popular as a tourist place than a religious one due to its breathtaking scenery and extravagant beauty.

Girnar Temple is one of the holy places in Gujarat, located near Junagadh at a distance of 327 from Ahmedabad. It is a holy place and a chief pilgrimage for both Hindus and Jains. Present are a number of temples located here, which have converted it into a township of temples. Amidst the lush green Gir Forest, the mountain range serves as the hub of holy action. Apart from this, there is a mosque attracting a lot of Muslim pilgrims to the place. This has made Girnar a great example of unity in diversity in India.

The height has been a chief holy place since the 3rd century. Girnar temples present a true blend of art, faith and devotion. The sculptural art used in these temples is outstanding. They have stood the test the time and the cruelty of different invaders. Even with that, the art forms of the temples still retain their magnificence. The Jain temples at Girnar attract devotees of both Shwetambar and Digambar sects of Jainism. The Neminath Temple is the major attraction of Girnar. It was built throughout 1128 AD to 1159 AD.

According to Jain religious attitude, Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankar became an ascetic behind he saw the slaughter of animals for food on his wedding. He renounced all worldly pleasures and came to Mount Girnar to attain salvation. Here, Bhagwan Neminath reached the highest state of enlightenment, Keval Gyan and Moksha, behind huge austerities. His bride-to-be also followed his path and founded the 'Sandhvi Sangh', the society of women ascetics. The rectangular Neminath temple is the most temples here.

It has an idol of Lord Neminath in black granite with jeweled eyes. Present are quadrangle courtyards, corridors and other shrines. The pillars are decorated with intricate carvings of Jain Tirthankars. The ceilings bear carvings and sculptures of Dancing Goddesses. Apart from this, present is the Mallinath temple, which is devoted to the 19th Tirthankar. It was constructed by Vastupal and Tejpal. Neminath in 1231 AD. The Lord is shown in blue color here. The Rishabhadev Temple, located nearby, is in golden color.

It is dedicated to 24 Tirthankars of Jain faith. A different Jain temple in the region is the Parshwanath Temple. It was built in the 15th century and is also known as Meravasi. Besides this, there is a Goddess Ambe Temple at Grinar. The temple is visited by the just wedded couples for high-quality fortune and prosperous married life. A mosque nearby is thronged by childless women for blessings. The Dattatreya hill, middle down the temple cluster, also houses a number of other temples worth seeing.

Amarnath cave temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. An enshrined image of ice logically formed in a cylindrical form which resembles Lord Shiva-Linga, begins to get its shape on the first day of the brilliant half of the month and reaches its full size on the full moon day (Poornima). Behind getting its fullest shape, it begins to wane and disappear on the new moon day. According to the tradition, the major ice structure is careful as Lord Shiva Linga, one on the left side of the linga is an ice structure of Lord Ganesha, and on the right are formations of Parvati and Bhairava. The Amarnath temple is around 46 kms from Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir and 4500mtrs above the sea level. The time of pilgrimage to this holy shrine is between July and August.
History of the temple

Present is no clear cut information of the discovery of the cave. The credit of discovery goes to a shepherd (Gujar) Buta Malik, it is said that he was given a bag full of coal by a saint. Even as the shepherd opened to see in his house it was a bag full of gold. The happy shepherd went back to thank the saint but establish a cave with a lingam inside it. Then onwards this leave has become the sacred place of Pilgrimage

A particular myth says that Kashyap a sage drained the lake of Kashmir and found the cave along with the lingam in it.

Hindu mythology says that this Amarnath cave is the cave which was used by Lord Shiva to tell about the secret of life and eternity to Goddess Parvathi. He was looking for a secret isolated place to tell this "amar katha" to goddess Parvathi. So he selects this cave. And as a preparation he left his vehicle Nandi, the bull in Pahalgam (Bhail Gaow), free the moon at Chandanwari, snake at Lake Sheshnag, Lord Ganesh at Mahagunas parvat, five elements of life at Panjitarni. Finally he created Rudra (Kalagni) and prepared him to set a fire and eliminate each living thing in and around the holy cave. Then Lord Shiva took Parvathi Goddess inside the cave to tell the amar katha.

Amarnath Yatra

Every year lakhs of pilgrims visit this holy shrine. The yathra to Amarnath begins at Srinagar on the month of shravan. Subsequent halts are at Avantipur, Brijbihara, Martand, Pahalgam, Chandanwadi, Wavjan and the Mahagunus Pass. From here, the Amarnath cave is reached on the full moon day, and the pilgrimage is complete, the more general practice is to begin the journey from Pahalgam.

Shri Amarnath Welfare Committee undertakes welfare actions regarding provision for boarding and lodging facilities free of cost on the route to the cave shrine.

By Air : The nearest airport is at Renigunta(15 kms). Tirupati is linked by air with Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. From the airport you can hire a taxi or an auto rickshaw or you can take a bus to reach the temple.

By Rail : Tirupati temple is fine linked by roads and proper transport services to the nearest railway station located at Tirupati. This place is linked by rail with Hubbi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolhapur , Mumbai, Puri, Tiruchirapalli, Varanasi and Vijayawada.

By Road : To reach Tirupati temple, one must first reach Tirupati. It is connected with important cities like Hyderabad (617), Banglore(248), Chennai(151 km), Vijayawada(380 km) and Lepakshi (379 km) through good roadways.

Vaishno Devi is one of the holiest Hindu temple sites which are devoted to Goddess Shakti. The temple is situated around 12 km away from Katra in the Udhampur district. The temple is located at a height of 1615 m on the Trikuta Hills of Shivalik Range. Pilgrims, particularly Hindus from all over the world visit Vaishno Devi making it the next most visited shrine in India after Tirupati Balaji Mandir. There are three rock cut statues in the 100 feet long cave. The middle one represents Goddess Lakshmi, right statue represents Goddess Kali and left one represents Goddess Saraswati.

Every type of people, whether they are rich or poor, young or old, sick or healthy take the difficult trek from Katra to get to this holy place. Just join any group that is climbing to the cave and suffer the devotion run down your body with each breath you take. There are many tea stalls and Dhabas along the way wherever you can stop for a while and take rest. Reaching Vaishno Devi by railway is a relatively economical option as fine as an attractive one as you will get a glimpse of rural India from up close. Jammu is the major railhead for Vaishno Devi and you can simply get the super fast and express trains for the different destinations of India including Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Vaishno Devi by Road:

Road access to Vaishno Devi is very suitable as the region has well-maintained network of state and national highways.
